Empowering and engaging young professionals in the Shoals area through community service, career development and networking opportunities.

Welcome to the Shoals Young Professionals Association

We believe that SYPA will offer you many opportunities to become involved in the Shoals community through our social,
charitable, civic and professional development opportunities. You will make a difference in the
Shoals community by being an active SYPA member. Further, we hope that your positive experience
with SYPA will entice you to invite other young professionals to join our growing, dynamic group.

The core business case for establishing a young professionals’ network locally, regionally and at a state or even national level boils down to a 12-22 year shortfall in the working population as the largest demographic, the boomers, are replaced by the smallest, Gen Xers. It’s a 2:1 ratio, 2 Boomers to each GenXer resulting in a 10 million worker shortage by the year 2010. And the shift has just begun. Also take into account the coveted Millenniums, also referred to as the Echo Boom. There are lots of them and they’re graduating. The business community recognizes the need to attract and retain GenXers, and the customer potential of the Millenniums. Forming a network to attract them makes economic sense.

There is a young professional case to make as well. SYPA is self-organizing to fulfill a desire for social networking, including community service; and we’re looking for professional development—learning the skills we need to engage ourselves in the community and in leadership roles. Many YP’s feel that traditional civic clubs (i.e. Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis) don’t fit their need for relevant, real-time skill-building and connection with their peers. (source: ypcommons.org)
